Shapps: £2bn package for cycling and walking
The transport secretary said millions of people have discovered the positive effects of walking and cycling during the lockdown.
In some places there has been a rise of 70% and he said people should continue to do that instead of using public transport or driving.
He said a £2bn package will be made available now to put cycling and walking at the heart of of the lockdown easing measures.
£250m will make cycling and walking safer – cycle lanes and wider pavements.
Councils will now have to cater for a “significant” rise in walking and cycling.
A voucher scheme will be available for older bikes while the cycle to work scheme, already available, will help people to buy bikes.
